CHAPTER 2
Just as he figured. Will jerked away from the store window before they saw him peering out like a little boy not allowed to come out and play. Isabella Shrock stood there in front of God and everyone talking to those Englisch teenagers as if she couldn’t wait to get into their car and drive away. That’s how it started. He should go out there and tell her so. As a member of her community, he had a responsibility.
His knuckles on the windowsill turned white. He breathed and forced himself to loosen his grip. He’d intervened before and what had it gotten him? An irreparably damaged heart.
Isabella looked innocent enough with her fair skin, dark-brown eyes, and slight body. Barely past being a child. Her cheeks had stained the color of the tomatoes in the jars she carried into the store when she asked to clean up her mess. Her voice quivered. Yet she stood her ground. It meant something to her. She had the strength of her convictions, a quality that appealed to him. He should’ve let her do as she asked. He still could. All he had to do was walk out that door.
Nee. Better he should let her learn her lesson on her own.
She had displayed spunk or pluck. She might fare better than he thought.
Snorting to himself, he strode behind the counter and into the back room for the bucket and cleaning supplies. Plain women did not aspire to have spunk or pluck or whatever.
Yet there had been that moment, over a bag of rags of all things. Her gaze had been piercing. Knowing. Those deep-brown eyes the color of strong-brewed kaffi had peered into him past the stone walls he’d constructed around his heart. Still waters ran deep and something about his encounter with Isabella made him wonder just how deep hers were.
Her fingers were soft and tender on his. No one had touched him in a long time. Years.
Stop it.
He was past the stage of thinking he would find love. He lived alone on the farm his father had given him when his family moved back to Tennessee and he liked it. No fuss, no muss. His moment had passed when Leila Lantz chose his cousin Jesse, despite all the repercussions she would face as a result. Like never coming home. Never seeing her family again. Never seeing Will again.
Like Isabella, Leila had the strength of her convictions. She had made her choice. Now, he lived with it. Gott had blessed him with a new beginning when Leroy decided to let him help out in the store on a regular basis. He was blessed. Reminding himself of that fact set Will in motion.
He picked out the glass from the broken jar and tossed it into a bag on the floor next to him. Then he filled the bucket with soapy water, grabbed a scrub brush, and went to work. He scrubbed the floor until his shoulders ached. The beet juice refused to be vanquished.
